ITR Filing Checklist For Salaried Individuals

ITR Filing Checklist For Salaried Individuals

Filing your income tax return does not have to be stressful. If you are a salaried employee, most of what you need is already with you or your employer — the trick is gathering it in one place before you start. Here is the checklist we share with every salaried client at Janani Tax Services.

Keep in mind the standard due date: 31st July of the assessment year. Filing early means faster refunds and no last-minute portal traffic.

“Ninety percent of return errors we see come from missing documents, not complicated tax law. Gather everything first, and filing becomes simple.”

Documents You Need

Before you (or we) log into the income tax portal, collect the following. Most of these arrive between April and June each year.

ITR documents checklist
PAN and Aadhaar (linked to each other)
Form 16 from your employer (both Part A and Part B)
Annual Information Statement (AIS) and Form 26AS
Bank statements and interest certificates
Investment proofs: 80C, 80D, NPS, home loan interest
Rent receipts if you claim HRA

Five Quick Tips Before You File

1. Match your Form 16 with AIS/26AS. Mismatches between what your employer reported and what the department sees are the most common cause of notices.

2. Compare old vs new regime. The better regime changes with your deductions — do the comparison every year, not once.

3. Report all bank interest. Savings and FD interest is visible to the department through AIS — skipping it invites a mismatch notice.

4. Include income from a previous employer if you switched jobs during the year. Two Form 16s means combining both before computing tax.

5. E-verify within 30 days. An unverified return is treated as not filed. Aadhaar OTP takes less than a minute — do it immediately after filing.
