GST Registration: Documents & Timeline Explained

GST Registration: Documents & Timeline Explained

Registering for GST is one of the first compliance steps for a growing business — and one of the most misunderstood. Business owners often either register too late (and face penalties) or too early (and take on monthly filing they didn’t need yet). Here is what actually matters.

Who Must Register?

GST registration becomes mandatory when your annual turnover crosses Rs. 40 lakh for goods or Rs. 20 lakh for services in most states. It is also mandatory regardless of turnover if you sell across state lines, supply through e-commerce platforms like Amazon or Flipkart, or are liable under reverse charge. Voluntary registration is possible too — useful when your customers want GST invoices or you want to claim input tax credit.

“Register when your customers, suppliers or turnover demand it — not just because everyone else has a GSTIN. Each registration carries a monthly filing commitment.”

Documents Required

For a proprietorship, the list is short. Companies and partnerships need a few extras like the incorporation certificate and board resolution.

PAN and Aadhaar of the proprietor / partners / directors
Passport-size photograph
Business address proof (electricity bill, rent agreement + NOC)
Bank account proof (cancelled cheque or statement)
Entity documents for companies / LLPs / partnerships

How Long Does It Take?

With clean documents, the application itself takes a day to prepare and file. The department then verifies — approval typically comes within 3 to 7 working days. If Aadhaar authentication is not completed or the officer raises a query, physical verification can stretch this to 2–3 weeks, which is why getting the application right the first time matters.

After approval you receive your GSTIN and can start issuing GST invoices immediately. Remember: from your first month, returns must be filed even if there are no sales (nil returns) — missing them attracts late fees from day one.
